Mechatronics Certifications vs PE (2026)
Quick answer: Technician credentials are optional vendor and industry certifications on top of an AAS. Engineer licensure is the FE-to-PE path, which is a state-board process and usually wants an ABET-EAC bachelor’s. This page names the stacks. Technician stack (no PE)
Ask the school, in writing, which of these it actually delivers in the lab:
- Siemens Mechatronic Systems Certification Program (SMSCP), where the school is a partner
- FANUC or other robot-OEM instructor credentials
- MSSC Certified Production Technician (CPT)
- Platform-specific PLC credentials the local plants run (Allen-Bradley / Rockwell, Siemens, others)
Names, levels, partner lists and fees change. Use the issuer’s directory, not a ranking table copied from another site.
The hire-against degree is still the AAS. Occupation: mechatronics technician.
Engineer stack (PE is a board, not a badge)
- ABET-EAC bachelor’s (mechatronics engineering CIP 14.4201, or mechanical / electrical engineering). See EAC vs ETAC.
- NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering exam.
- Qualifying experience under the rules of your state board.
- PE exam in the discipline the board accepts.
ETAC bachelor’s graduates sometimes sit the FE/PE with extra experience. Sometimes they cannot. Confirm with your state engineering licensing board before you enroll.
